Brazil buys 9 F-5s from Saudi Arabia

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will receive nine ex-Royal Saudi Arabia AF Northrop F-5 fighters. The package consists of six F-5E single-seat and three F-5F two-seat versions. The total value of the deal is US$ 24 million, US$ 2.6 million per aircraft.
All nine will be upgraded by Embraer under the F-5M program, currently in progress. A total of 46 FAB F-5s are already being upgraded by Embraer, the additional 9 aircraft will bring this number to 55. The FAB continues studies to find funding to buy 25 more F-5s until 2009, bringing the total fleet up to 80 aircraft, and to upgrade all to the F-5M standard with the type then scheduled to remain in service at least until 2025.
