Down Time |
|||
First of all my apologize for the website
being offline for about one week. There was a problem with the server on
which MILAVIA is located and it took the webhost more than a week to
respond and start fixing it. Even now after two weeks, the problem has not
been fixed completely. Because of this problem the url http://niels.brunklaus.com or http://niels.brunklaus.com/milavia
can no longer be used to enter the website. Please use http://www.milavia.net

New Webhosting Company |
|||
In the time the website was not available I
have been looking for a good professional webhosting company. I have found
a good one and bought a hosting package that well exceeds the requirements
of the current MILAVIA website. Of course the website will grow bigger and
bigger by time. But I am also reselling some of my space to friends, so
you might come across a very different website with a webaddress like
http://www.milavia.net/~user-id/ or
http://user-id.milavia.net. If
you are looking for a cheap hosting solution for a small website (smaller
than 100MB) contact me and we can see if we can get you on this server as
well. (Unlike the hosting companies, I don't try to make profit from
hosting, I am just trying to reduce my own costs.)
The move to the new server took some time to
complete and there were a few problems that needed to be fixed. This is
why the newsletter is a few weeks delayed. Anyway the new server is much
faster than the old one. Also I have to worry less about file
size and bandwidth.

NO RUSSIAN MIGS OR SUKHOIS
AT LE BOURGET AIR SHOW
After MiG declared that it would keep away
its aircraft from the Le Bourget airshow, also Sukhoi declared it has
halted all preparation work to send Sukhoi combat aircraft to the Paris
airshow. Both decisions are based on the fear that the aircraft will be
seized by the Swiss hotel chain Noga. Two
years ago, Noga tried to seize two Russian planes - a Su-30MKK combat
plane and a MiG-AT training plane - from the Le Bourget airfield. The
attempt failed. The firm says Russia owes it about 90 million euros
($106.1 million) in outstanding payments in a deal in which Noga supplied
food and loans to Russian businesses under Russian state guarantees in
exchange for oil products.
Noga sued the Russian government in 1994 for failing to fulfil its contract obligations, and a lawyer for the company told Reuters earlier this month, it might be obliged to try to seize planes this year. Russia had hoped the matter would be settled
before the annual Le Bourget show starts on June 15, but the latest
hearing at a French court showed the final verdict would not be announced
until July 2.

RUSSIAN FIFTH GENERATION
WARPLANE
The production of a fifth-generation warplane
complete with an autodiagnostics system will soon begin, according to
Mikhail Pogosyan, the general director of state unitary aircraft company
Sukhoi.
"This will bring down operational costs considerably," he told a press conference in Moscow on June 3. Work on the fifth-generation warplane is going according to schedule, he told journalists. "We have already received an order from the Defense Ministry and we have almost completed the contractual details," he said. According to him, specialists are currently working on the aircraft's conceptual design. Officials have announced that the winners of the tenders will design and produce various units of the aircraft. The power-supply unit, for instance, will be designed by the research and production association Saturn. (RIA Novosti, via Russian Aviation

PROLONGED UH-1H SERVICE LIFE WITH US
ARMY
The US Army is currently considering to
retain OH-58A/C Kiowa and UH-1H Huey helicopters for support and test
tasks. Because of the low speed of equiping Army National Guard units with
the UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64A Apache helicopters due to lack of
airframes this proposal has been brough forward by the National Guard
Bureau. Bell helicopters has proposed the Huey II upgrade which includes a
new engine, transmission, gearbox, rotor blades and drive systems. By 2008
a new commercial off-the-shelf light utility helicopter will be procured
to take over the task.

Quiz
Results |
|||
The correct answer to the May 2003 quiz is
the L159 ALCA. This advanced jet trainer is an advanced combat
capable version of L39/59 Albatross series by Aero, a Czech aircraft
manufacturer. Aero and Boeing set up a joint venture to develop and market
the light attack trainer. It will be compatible with a number of Western
weapons such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder and the AGM-65 Maverick. The quiz
picture only showed a part of the canopy of the L159 prototype. You could
have distinguished it from the other Aero jet trainer by the serial
number, the grey camoflage and the little bump in front of the
canopy.
The winners are:
Others who were very close with another
version of the trainer L39/59/139 were:
Michel van Put (Belgium)
Rob Henderson (United Kingdom) Dave Rhue (USA) Ray Robb (USA) Stuart Sanders (United Kingdom) Unfortunately there are no prizes to be won,
but I hope you all enjoyed this quiz and take part again in the new quiz!
The new quiz picture is a difficult one as well. I hope you all take part
again.

A Word
from the Webmaster |
|||
The move to the new server has been
completed. It is now time to start adding aircraft, air force pictorials
and other information again. It seems that I have not got much time left
for this work during the rest of this month, but in the second half of
July I have already reserved time to work on the website. You can expect
more aircraft sections, more air force pictorials, more FAV and RNLAF
pictures and new wallpapers.
I hope that those of you that showed interest
in helping me with some content, can (continue to) send me their
contributions in the period that I have not enough time myself. I highly
appreciate your efforts to help me creating one of the best military
aviation websites on the web.
Thanks,
Niels Hillebrand
