Black Diamond Jet Team
Country | United States |
Base | Lakeland, FL |
Aircraft | 4 x L-39 Albatros, 1x T-33 |
Previously known as the Heavy Metal Jet Team, the civilian-owned formation team was named the Black Diamond Jet Team for its 2012 season. The team delivered displays consisting of a main formation of usually four, sometimes five, L-39 basic jet trainers joined by a single MiG-17 fighter or T-33 jet trainer as the solo, flown by Captain Dale "Snort" Snodgrass, USN (ret.). All aircraft are painted in a distinctive arctic camouflage. For the 2012 season, a second MiG-17 was added, providing a six-ship formation, and two-ship as well as opposing solo flights along the main formation. Unfortunately, the team was forced to reduce a number of their appearances to the five-ship (four L-39s and one MiG-17) or even just L-39 two-ship displays due to corporate responsibilities of its team members, as they are also part of a defense contracting company.
For its 2013 season, the team had drastically scaled back its airshow appearances and replaced the MiG-17(s) with the T-33 as the solo / fifth aircraft.
The Black Diamond Jet Team will perform during the 2014 airshow season, but it has not announced its schedule yet and posted on Facebook that "2014 is shaping up to be a quiet [year] for The Black Diamond Jet Team". The team has appeared at the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show of May 16-18, 2014.
In addition to a limited number of airshows, the Black Diamond Jet Team sometimes performs fly-overs at sports events.
