Turkish Air Force KT-1 Contract Signed
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and Korea Aerospace Industries(KAI) finalished the contract for the procurement of up to 55 of Korea's KT-1 basic trainer aircraft for the Turkish Air Force at a ceremony, held at TAI’s facilities on 18 July 2007.
In order to meet the future basic trainer aircraft requirement of the Turk Hava Kuvvetleri (THK - Turkish Air Force), a Request for Proposal was issued by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (Savaunma Sanayii Mustesarligi - SSM) in January 2006. Embraer (Brazil) with the EMB-314 Super Tucano and KAI (South Korea) with the KT-1 Wong Bee had been the only two companies to submit bids.
A proposal evaluation team consisting of SSM and KTH members completed evaluation by June 2007. At the Defense Industry Executive Committee Meeting held on 20 June 2007, contract negotiations were decided to be initiated with KAI.
The contract comprises a firm order for 40 KT-1Basic Trainer Aircraft, plus options on a further 15. Deliveries will commence in 2008. The KT-1 aircraft will replace the existing THK fleet of SF260Ds and T-37B/Cs in the elementary and basic training role respectively.
